Six seeking Mauao seat
Six candidates have put their names forward to contest next month's by-election for the Bay of Plenty Regional Council's Mauao Maori constituency.
The seat was left vacant by the death in November of Te Awanuiarangi Black.
Top of the list is Carlton Bidois from Ngati Ranginui, the runner up in last year's election by 144 votes.
Also standing are heritage consultant Antoine Coffin, Nga Potiki resource management unit manager Matire Duncan, Paora Paul Martin, regional council Maori policy advisor Matemoana McDonald, and Ngati Ranginui Fisheries Trust chair Christopher Stokes.
Electoral officer Robyn Garrett says voting packs will be posted to voters on the Mauao Maori electoral roll from 20 March 20, and voting closes at midday on April 11.
Only voters registered on the Maori electoral roll in the Mauao Maori constituency will be eligible to vote in the by-election.
The Mauao Maori constituency extends from the top of the Kaimai Mamaku ranges to Waihi Beach and Otamarakau, including Katikati, Tauranga, Matakana, Te Puke, Maketu, Pongakawa and the surrounding areas.
