Vaping benefits clear despite small rangatahi take up
Māori public health organisation Hāpai te Hauora is keen to work with the government on campaigns to discourage young people from taking up vaping.
Hāpai, which holds a national contract for tobacco control advocacy, sees vaping as a harm reduction tool that is effective in helping people quit cigarettes.
Spokesperson Mihi Blair says while a small number of young people are also taking up the practice, that should not be used to side track from the core issue that vaping is a less harmful alternative for those who smoke.
"We want to get our people to go on to vaping to quit but also a campaign to education our rangatahi that anything you put into your body, you have to look at the health and the benefits for your own tinana so we and they are really positive about Hāpai working with them," she says.
Hāpai would like to see restrictions on vaping advertising to bar targeting of rangatahi.
