Regulation needed for online media giants
The Broadcasting Standards Authority is keen for work to continue on regulation of online media.
Chief executive Stacey Wood says the BSA submitted a proposal to the Department of Internal Affairs earlier this year for a new online media regulator.
It wants online content platforms to show what steps they are taking to reduce harmful content and for the BSA to have the power to make them accountable.
It’s also consulting on possible standards to protect te reo Māori and address harm directed at Māori.
The new minister for Internal Affairs is ACT deputy leader Brooke van Velden.
ACT’s coalition agreement with National includes an amendment to the Education and Training Act 2020 requiring taxpayer-funded tertiary education providers to commit to a free speech policy.
