Jackson rejects Whaitiri excuse
Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says Labour leader Chris Hipkins is doing his best to support Māori aspirations.
Former Labour MP Meka Whaitiri claims the Māori caucus had more influence under Jacinda Ardern’s leadership … and Mr Hipkins is shifting policy to try to win back middle New Zealand.
Mr Jackson says it is a different political landscape, but Mr Hipkins is doing what’s needed to take the Labour team forward.
“Different to Jacinda, obviously, but in my view, just as supportive of Maori issues – so Maoridom should be assured you’ve got someone who’s cognizant of their cultural obligations you know? And it’s been really encouraging watching him come along, and supporting our aspirations,” he says.
Labour expects to name its candidate for Meka Whaitiri’s Ikaroa-Rawhiti seat by the end of the month.
