Theatre offers cheer up to locked down artists

Many artists are looking for novel ways to shake off the after-effects of lockdowns and Covid restrictions.
Cat Ruka from Auckland’s Basement Theatre says a four day Matariki wānanga this month for seven young Māori creatives is a way to recharge artists who may have been affected creatively by the pandemic. .
It will include guides to maramataka and Te Tiriti ō Waitangi, korerō from mana whenua on the history of Tāmaki Mākaurau, as well as mirimiri and taonga pūoro sound healing.
“This is exactly what artists are wanting at the moment, just that chance to restore their energy before they get back into the swing of performing so the response has been great. We had many, many applications come in from young Māori artists all over Aotearoa, so that’s an indication this is the kind of thing people are looking for,” Ms Ruka says.
The seven artists selected for the wananga are comedian Janaye Henry, sculptor Tyrone Te Waa, dancer Natasha van Etten, musician Paige Pomana, writer and artist Delilah Pārore Southon, performance artist Louie Zalk-Neale, and writer Stevie Greeks.
