Omicron stops Wairau Gallery opening

The Wairau Māori Art Gallery Charitable Trust has cancelled the formal opening of the gallery attached to Whangarei’s new Hundertwasser Centre because of the Omicron threat.
Chair Elizabeth Ellis says the gallery will still open its doors to the public on February 20 with Puke Ariki, a survey of contemporary Māori art curated by Nigel Borrell.
The necessary karakia for the pou, mauri stone and water bowl will be carried out on preceding days at restricted, invitation-only ceremonies.
There will also be a ceremony for the planting of a rimu sourced from Hundertwasser’s Kaurinui property at Waikare.
Ms Ellis says the trust will hold an event on June 24 to coincide with Matariki when it hopes there will be less concern related to Covid-19.
