Outline agreed for Maori health authority
An independent Māori health authority has come a step close with the crown and the six claimants in the Health Services and Outcomes Kaupapa Inquiry filing a joint memorandum to the Waitangi Tribunal detailing its terms of reference.
National Urban Māori Authority chair Lady Tureiti Moxon says it’s a fundamental step in determining how Māori improve health for Māori.
At the top of the list of design principles are operational independence, adequate and enduring funding and mana motuhake or Māori control over health and wellbeing including service design, delivery and monitoring.
It also calls for the voice of diverse Māori groups and populations to be embedded while respecting the rangatiratanga of hapū, iwi, marae and whānau.
Lady Moxon says there will be consultation co-hosted by claimants and the crown to flesh out the plan and determine its feasibility.
