Parata slates karanga protest

Education Minister Hekia Parata has criticised a protest against Tony Abbott at the opening of the Australian War Memorial in Wellington yesterday.
The Peace Action Wellington members were calling on the Australian Prime Minister to reverse his policy of cutting federal funding from remote Aboriginal settlements.
Ms Parata says there was an irony in the way the protest continued as Mr Abbott was called on to the site.
"As the karanga was being issued forth protestors were protesting for indigenous rights. It just shows me that there are different ways of respecting indigenous practises. One of them would have been to respect our indigenous practise here in New Zealand" she says.
While she won’t comment on the decisions of another government, she says New Zealand has its own challenges dealing with issues in remote communities.
