Auckland councillor Alfie Filipaina says the safety of the community has to come first in the planning of large public events.

The council and Manukau Urban Māori Authority have postponed next Saturday’s Waitangi ki Manukau free community family day and concert in Hayman Park because of concerns over the possible leak of a new strain of COVID-19 into the community.

Mr Filipaina says while health authorities had not advised such a move, he understands MUMA’s concern.

"It's sad we have to, but things are more important like the safety of our community," he says.
