Top endorsement as Henare fights for Tamaki Makaurau
Labour Party leader Jacinda Ardern says Tāmaki Makaurau is an important seat for the party to retain.
Incumbent Peeni Henare will this evening go head to head in a debate at Ngā Whare Waatea with former MP and Māori Party candidate John Tamihere and the Greens co-leader Marama Davidson, both of whom say they also want the electorate vote.
The Prime Minister says Mr Henare’s connections with the electorate have informed his work as Minister for Whānau Ora, Civil Defence and Associate Health.
"I back our candidate. He's done such a fantastic job, taken on some significant and senior roles and is an incredible representative in parliament I think has earned his role continuing to represent Tāmaki Makaurau," Ms Ardern says.
She says having an MP who is not only in Government but has a ministerial role is better for constituents.
The debate at Ngā Whare Waatea will start at 7pm.
