Canal Rd sitters to hikoi to CBD

A group trying to save a stand of rare native trees in Avondale will march into the city tomorrow to press their case for Auckland Council to step in an save the land from development.
Arborist and tree sitter Zane Wedding says the hīkoi marks the 100th day of the protest.
He says it’s a major test for the council’s commitment to green spaces.
"Avondale is a low socio-economic area and it is amazing to see the tui fly in the native trees every morning. If the council can't see that is somewhere they are meant to be completely active, they are just inept in their ability to do their job," Mr Wedding says.
He says the Canal Rd grove would be a great urban classroom to teach about the ngahere and the region’s heritage.
