Whale of a tale on kauri cure

A treatment inspired by tales of the ancient connection between the giants of land and sea is being proposed for kauri dieback disease.

Rongoa expert Tohe Ashby says the tohora or whale and the kauri were brothers separated by Tohora's desire to live at sea.

Unable to come back onto land Tohora is helpless to save his dying tuakana – which is why his mission is to reunite the two.

"When we have a whole lot of scabs on us, our tūpuna always said to us "haere koe ki te moana. So this is no different from taking the seawater to the kauri," he says
