Better cancer screening call from Māori health inquiry

Parliament’s Māori Affairs Committee is calling for an equity positive lung cancer screening programme to address disproportionate mortality rates among Māori with the disease.

It’s one of 19 recommendations contained in the report of the committee’s inquiry into health inequities for Māori.

Chair Rino Tirikatene says other recommendations, such as requiring healthcare workers to undergo cultural safety training and establishing a te ao Māori Health Promotion Agency, can create structural change in the system even beyond cancer treatment.

"We know that there are inequities there. This applies right across the board but i think we are able to try to move things forward for Māori in the health and disability system as a whole just by making these changes we certainly hope will be implemented," he says.
