Greenpeace wants bottles added to plastic ban

Greenpeace wants the Government to go further on plans to phase more single-use plastics.
After banning plastic shopping bags, seven more items are on the list to keep from ending up as waste in the sea, including hard-to-recycle PVC and polystyrene packaging, plastic straws and drink stirrers, produce bags, plastic plates, bowls and cutlery, and non-compostable fruit stickers.
Plastics campaigner Holly Dove says plastic drink bottles need to be added to the list, as the majority of the billion bottles sold in this country each year end up in landfill or the sea.
She says it should be guided by the philosophy of kaitiakitanga.
"If we were actually listening to indigenous voices we would be respecting land and we wouldn't be creating things that can't break down in the environment like plastic that lasts for 500 years. We would not make that if we had some kind of respect and honouring the whenua," Ms Dove says.
