Māori-owned dairy company Miraka says five of its 101 milk suppliers achieved a 100 percent score in its Te Ara Miraka sustainable farming programme.
In total 18 farms achieved a score of 90 percent or more, compared with just 10 when the awards began four years ago.
The excellence standards cover criteria such as animal welfare, sustainable land management, and supporting staff, with high scoring farming getting paid extra over the base milk price.
Chief executive Richard Wyeth says Miraka’s goal is to become the most sustainable dairy company in the world.
He says by supporting farms to apply environmentally sound practices the Taupō area processor is helping to create climate-resilient farms that produce some of the highest quality milk in the world.
