Hayes keen on stronger Māori health authority
National’s Māori development spokesperson says a proposed Māori heath authority needs to have the status of a ministry.
Jo Hayes says the model recommended in the report of the Health and Disability Services Review falls well short of what is needed.
She says Māori are sick of being forced into advisory roles.
"We know already what the problem is. What we need is the ability and the power and the funding to go with it, to be able to stop that advising and get some action on the ground, and this Māori health authority does not do that," Ms Hayes says.
She says the three funds the advisory board is slated to be in charge of – for innovation fund, provider development and workforce development – are a tiny fraction of the multi-billion dollar health spend.
