Tapsell focuses on political step up
National’s new East Coast candidate says leaving home at 16 to pursue a business qualification set her on course to seek a spot in parliament.
Tania Tapsell got the chance to contest the safe blue seat because incumbent Anne Tolley is standing as a list-only candidate.
The Rotorua District Councillor and former business consultant says her introduction to National came from being Rotorua MP Todd McClay’s youth MP when she was 16.
Her analysis was the party had delivered better for Māori.
"The values that party brings in terms of limited government, getting out of the way and ensuring individuals can actually make a better life for themselves and not telling them what they need to do and not restricting them with government policy is something I've actually looked at and really admired so it's an honour and pleasure to be the East Coast candidate for the National Party. Its a step my family always saw coming and they are incredibly happy and proud I am taking on this next role," she says.
Tania Tapsell says it’s fitting the East Cape electorate, which runs from Te Puke to Gisborne, will be a contest between two young wahine Māori, with Kiri Allen flying the flag for Labour.
