Hāpai to research fetal alcohol impact

Māori health advocacy organisation Hāpai te Hauora has won a major grant from the Health Research Council to study whānau Māori experiences with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder diagnosis.
Alcohol Health watch director Dr Nicki Jackson, who is a senior advisor on the project, says there are huge research gaps in understanding the impact of FASD, especially on Māori.
That's despite evidence showing Māori experience disproportionate levels of alcohol related harm.
The project will work with communities most affected by FASD to identify what support and care is working and what isn't.
Hāpai chief executive Selah Hart says the research can be used to improve policy by giving insights into people's lived experiences with alcohol.
