Iwi keen Waikato developments good for land and people

Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta says iwi will play a critical role in guiding the future development of the area between Auckland and Hamilton.
The Government, councils and iwi last week signed up to an urban growth partnership to manage development between New Zealand's fastest two growing metropolitan areas.
Ms Mahuta says areas like Pokeno have mushrooms with little planning for infrastructure and services, and it's important to exert some overall direction.
The iwi focus has been about maintaining the health of the river and protecting special land areas.
"Iwi are also developers and they own land along the corridor they want to make sure anything they put their hand to is good for the environment, good for their people, creates employment and is done in partnership with others so it's a positive conversation," Ms Mahuta says.
