Kia Kaha! Reo week theme
The Māori Language Commission says the theme of this year’s Māori Language Week in September will be Kia Kaha te Reo Māori.
Taura Whiri chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui says the week starting September 9 will be a chance for everyone to do something to support the indigenous language and enjoy what it can add to our lives in Aotearoa.
Kia kaha came into popular, New Zealand wide use in the 19th century as part of the sports chant Kia Kaha, Ake, Ake, Ake.
Mr Apanui says it also points to the fact that there are many things that strengthen te reo Māori – not just learning and using the language.
