Iwi leaders set sights on land management

The Iwi Leaders Forum wants to take over management of the land set aside for treaty settlements.
Member Willie Te Aho says the issue was discussed at the most recent meeting in Gisborne.
He says the properties are put in a land bank, but until settlement claimants can’t use those properties or collect any of the rent that they generate.
"What the iwi chairs support is acquiring the entire landbank portfolion, over $25 million of properties, managing those on behalf of the iwi going through the settlement phase, and then when they receive their settlement, transferring not only the properties but also the rentals as well as allowing each iwi in each region to do the hands on management of those properties," Mr Te Aho say.
The iwi leaders are talking through the idea with Crown officials.
