The Nurses Organisation wants to see the longstanding inequity in ethnic pay addressed in tomorrow’s Wellbeing Budget.
Kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku says there is a wage gap of up to 25 percent between nurses working in Māori providers and those in other parts of the health sector.
She says that’s unacceptable puts significant pressure on Māori nurses and their whānau, with some nurses working two jobs to cover household bills.
Nurses Organisation president Grant Brookes says the inequities result from the sustained underfunding of Māori health and limitations in the current funding formula
He says if the crown is to fulfil its obligations under te Tiriti o Waitangi it needs to invest in Māori health and Māori nurses in particular.
Meanwhile, National Party leader Simon Bridges says leaked Budget papers confirm the Government intends to fund a Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission.
Finance Minister grant Robertson says he has asked National not to release any other Budget papers after Treasury revealed the it has evidence the material is a result of a systematic hack and is now subject to a Police investigation.
