Police call in community to help with family violence

A south Auckland family violence worker hopes the $320 million boost in next week’s Budget to tackle sexual and family violence will allow for more frontline community workers.

James Papali’i from the Manukau Urban Māori Authority says he’s also pleased to see a commitment to the police working more with community agencies.

There’s already an initiative in south Auckland, Project Harakeke, where Counties Manukau police bring in Māori and Pasifika community workers on call-outs.

"We know the system works because we are able to get into the whānau at the early stages. It could be the first, second, third, fourth call out, so the violence is starting to happen and we are able to say we are in there at the early stages of it, and that is the best chance to turn this violence around," Mr Papali'i says.
