The Crown has signed a Deed of Settlement with Matamata-based iwi Ngāti Hinerangi.

At a ceremony at Te Ohaki Marae on Saturday Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little apologised on behalf of the Crown for failing to uphold its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

He says Ngāti Hinerangi’s claims relate to conflict with the Crown in Tauranga and the subsequent land purchasing regime that left the iwi virtually landless, contributing to economic and social marginalisation and loss of traditional tribunal structures and knowledge.

The settlement includes $8.1 million in financial redress, a $200,000 cultural revitalisation payment, a co-governance arrangement over the upper Waihou and Piako river catchments, and vesting of 14 cultural redress properties including part of Wairere Falls.
