Let's be honest, for a Bill that is hearing its second reading next month, the Euthanasia debate has been woeful.

When you consider the loopholes existing in the current version of the legislation we could get to a situation where kids as young as 16 without their parents permission could access euthanasia.

Doctors have given testimony that getting clear consent from a terminal patient can be difficult at the best of times and the pressure many feel towards being a burden nay have more influence than pain.

Allowing the state to arrange legal suicides will of course fall most heavy on the poorest and weakest amongst us. To make such a fundamental change to the right of life care the State is obliged to uphold with such pathetic debate is an indictment on our quality of democracy.

I look at the way the mentally ill, prisoners, state tenants and beneficiaries are currently treated by our mean spirited neoliberal welfare state agencies, giving the State the power to conduct legal suicides is in my opinion a recipe for disaster.
