Time to retire kōhao rau tag for Ngāpuhi

The chair of the Ngāti Hine Rūnanga says former MP Hone Harawira’s call for a Ngāpuhi parliament is fanciful and would raise more questions than it answers.
But Te Waihoroi Shortland says it’s likely to draw a measure of support as people look for ways to end fighting within the tribe.
"Some kaumātua have approached me and said we've got to find something to get rid of this kōhao rau thing that people have a perception of when talking about Ngāpuhi. Ngāpuhi of 100 pitfalls, we wear it like a badge but some of the old people have said it's time to set it aside because it's no use if we keep falling down through the holes, maybe we should be plugging the holes," he says.
Mr Shortland says the big problem in the north is not that people don’t want a settlement but that they don’t know how to treat each other well.
