TVNZ cashes in on Maori footage
Maori working in screen and television as well as the New Zealand Maori Council have sounded the alarm Television New Zealand selling access its archives through US firm Getty Images.
Hineani Melbourne from Nga Aho Whakaari says it includes Maori footage which the roopu believes belongs not to the state broadcaster but to Aotearoa.
"Programmes like Waka Huia, when we asked people to take part in Waka Huia one of their biggest fears was that Pakeha would sell their image and their knowledge. We had to reassure them it wouldn’t happened and they only gave their grudging agreement because they wanted us to preserve their knowledge, their reo, their tikanga for future generations," she says.
Hineani Melbourne says TVNZ claims to be the guardian of the footage and can filter our inappropriate use, but its structure no longer includes Maori in senior positions who can oversee that.
