Te Patukirikiri sign up for $3m settlement

The Crown has signed a deed of settlement with a small Hauraki iwi that was devastated by the discovery of gold under its land.
Te Patukirikiri is to receive $3 million in financial and commercial redress and the return of several sites of cultural significance, including the Coromandel Hospital property and Opera Point at Whangaparaoa, which it will share with Ngāti Hei.
It will also receive redress through the Marutūahu Collective Settlement.
Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little says the settlement can never fully compensate for the wrongs of the past, but it provides groundwork for their cultural, social and economic future.
Te Patukirikiri lost land through early sales, confiscation during the Land Wars and through having their land licensed to gold miners and subsequently put into perpetual leases.
