DOC book koha for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori
With Conservation Week and Māori Language Week overlapping this year, the Department of Conservation and has teamed up with the Māori Language Commission to develop a new booklet.
Kia Kaha te Reo Taiao includes information about pronunciation, everyday phrases and species’ names in te reo Māori.
It also covers astronomy, freshwater, marine, flora, fauna, and outdoor safety.
DOC strategic partnerships director Joe Harawira says te reo Māori is the foundation of Te Ao Māori, and the Department of Conservation recognises the notion of kaitiakitanga as crucial to the giving of voice to nature and to the natural world: Te Ao Tūroa.
He draws a parallel between the vulnerability of te reo Māori and the voices of the environment.
The theme for this year’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is Kia Kaha te Reo Māori, let’s make the Māori language strong.
The themes of Conservation Week, which starts on Saturday, are flora, fauna, marine and freshwater.
