Think tank check for reo policy
Associate Education Minister Kelvin Davis has asked noted Māori language experts for advice on implementing the Government’s new policy to integrate te reo Māori into the curriculum by 2025.
He says Te Ahu o te reo Māori will support teachers to deliver te reo in the classroom, so the first step will be focus on those teachers who already have good capability in te reo and are looking for ways to improve their confidence.
A one-day think tank meeting in Wellington today, including educators and experts such as Sir Timoti Karetu, Moe Milne, Ruakere Hond, Rahui Papa and Quinton Hita, will also discuss a new assessment framework, Te Kawa Matakura.
"We’re looking to establish a Māori qualification that would run parallel with NCEA. We're looking to see how that could work and how we select people for that and how would it all come together," Mr Davis says.
Te Kawa Matakura is a response to calls to pilot a traditional wānanga Māori which can produce rangatahi conversant in matauranga Maori in mind, body and wairua.
