Hate hucksters threat to race relations

Anti-racism campaigner John Minto says there is no free speech issue with the impending visit of a pair of right wing speakers because their aim is not to contest ideas but to provoke hate against racial and religious minorities.
Lauren Southern and Stefan Molyneux are seeking a venue in New Zealand after Auckland mayor Phil Goff blocked their use of council facilities.
That decision is being challenged in court by the newly-formed Free Speech Coalition, which includes Hobson’s Pledge founder Don Brash and commentators Chris Trotter and Lindsay Perigo.
Mr Minto says the pair’s rhetoric about the collapse of western society leaves no room for Māori values.
"This can only be damaging to race relations or what we have here. They’d be staunchly opposed to the Treaty of Waitangi or any recognition of the Treaty of Waitangi. They’ve been opposed to any kind of recognition of values other than those white European values from the nineteenth century," he says.
In contrast with the speed with which Immigration New Zealand processed the pair’s visas, the Humanist Society says the department still hasn’t issued visas for some speakers and board members for next month’s International Humanist and Ethical Union conference in Auckland.
