Council chips in for Beachhaven marae
Auckland Council has agreed to put $142,000 towards the first stage of building a marae at Beachhaven.
The estimated cost for the proposed Uruamo Maranga Ake Marae complex is $7 million.
Uruamo Maranga Ake chair Frances Waaka says Māori in the area have been trying since the 1970s to build a marae.
She says it will help give local Māori a sense of belonging and go some way towards addressing issues of identity and the loss of some of the basics of Māori culture.
The Auckland Council Māori Cultural Initiatives Fund has funded 28 separate applications from 10 marae groups in the past three years, totaling over $3 million.
