Budget service exposes boarding house blight

Jacinda Ardern is promising Labour will regulate boarding houses to ensure they are fit for purpose as part of a range of measures to address the needs of low income families.

The Labour Party leader visited the Mangere Budgeting Service to hear how the Government's policies are affecting its clients.

Chief executive Darryl Evans told her the service is funded for 306 families, but this year has already seen almost 3000.

He says high rents are forcing families to move away to more remote areas or into caravan parks, garages and overcrowded, substandard boarding houses.

Ms Ardern says Labour has a plan of action that will make a difference, starting with more state housing.

"We also want to see regulation around boarding houses and under a Labour government you will see a regulatory regime introduced to make sure that those who offer up boarding houses are making sure that they have a home that is warm that is dry that has the basics like windows. We don't even see that now in some of our boarding houses," she says.

Jacinda Ardern says it's clear the families in south Auckland can't afford another three years of National Government.
