Waikato draws world indigenous scholars
Waikato University has secured the right to host the 2019 Native American and Indigenous Studies Association conference, the first time it has been held outside North America.
Lisa Gardiner from Tourism New Zealand says the event was secured because of Waikato’s strong cultural links and a long relationship with the association by Professor Brendan Hokowhitu, the dean of the university’s faculty of Maori and indigenous studies.
Up to 800 international indigenous studies experts are expected for the June conference.
Professor Hokowhitu says hosting the world’s preeminent indigenous studies conference will put the university and the region on the world stage.
It’s a chance for staff and students not just from indigenous studies but from related disciplines to interact with some of the best indigenous minds, to refresh, refocus and rethink curricula, research and scholarship.
