Tree planting chance to recharge wairua

Gumboots, raincoats and spades will be the order of the day tomorrow when Ngati Whatua Orakei holds its annual tree plating on Takaparawha Bastion Point.
Orakei Reserves Trust chair Sharon Hawke says the hapu is gradually reforesting much of the 27 hectares of whenua rangatira that came back in the 1991 treaty settlement.
Planting is open to not just Ngati Whatua but the wider eastern suburbs community.
"We’re depositing back into Papatuanuku her taonga, her tamariki, actively physically connecting with her as part of building and fortifying our own wairua. This programme we run is to allow us to reconnect as a community, as individuals, as a hapu," she says.
Sharon Hawke says 3000 seedlings have been prepared, and she expects 70 or so volunteers can get those in the ground in a couple of hours before having a hangi lunch.
