Parihaka ready to accept crown package despite concerns.

Parihaka negotiators say they will go ahead with a settlement ceremony next month, despite concerns from many descendants the crown is getting off lightly for the damage it inflicted on the community for its stand against land confiscation.
They have told Attorney General Christopher Finlayson Attorney General a hui on Sunday expressed disappointment at the final cash offer of $9 million.
However, trustees of the Parihaka Papakainga Trust are now confident the community supports the overall crown package as a starting point for Parihaka’s future development.
They say the reconciliation ceremony date of May 27 will be a day of national and international significance.
The package includes a lump sum payment with interest to Parihaka, a relationship agreement with government agencies, a crown apology, and a legacy statement setting out the Parihaka story.
