After years of prayers and preparation, King Tuheitia is in an Auckland hospital awaiting a kidney transplant.
The donor is his youngest son, Korotangi Paki, who shares the same rare blood group.
His private secretary, Te Rangihiroa Whakaruru, says the operation was set down for next month but brought forward to tomorrow because of the 61-year-old’s deteriorating condition.
He describes him as having been almost handcuffed to a dialysis machine for the past six months.
There have been prayers at Turangawaewae Marae for the past two days, and his Kahui Kaumatua will hold a Pai Maaririe service at the hospital tonight.
