Coherent strategy needed for Maori education
Auditor General Lyn Provost wants all schools to implement the Ka Hikitia strategy to lift Maori educational achievement.
Past Audit Office reports on Maori education have criticised the implementation of Ka Hikitia and reported only modest improvements overall in Maori students' academic results since it was launched.
But in her latest report, Ms Provost says significant improvement in Maori education is a realistic objective.
She says some schools are implementing Ka Hikitia’s central concept of Maori succeeding as Maori in ways that make sense to their whanau and their Maori community, and those examples need to be shared more widely.
Ms Provost says too many Maori education initiatives are not connected or evaluated for cost-effectiveness.
Some need to be stopped, as a more coherent set of initiatives would probably result in better outcomes.
