More houses fix for affordability
Auckland mayor Len Brown says greater housing supply through the Unitary Plan is the best hope for housing affordability in the super city, especially for Maori.
The 6000-page plan signed off by councillors this week envisages capacity for more than 400,000 new dwellings across the city, include dense concentrations around railway stations and along main road networks.
Mr Brown says the aim is to get at least 15,000 houses a year built.
"With that amount of supply the hope is we will flatline the increase in average housing purchase price and start to see a reduction because we have that much supply going, For all Aucklanders and Maori in particlar tht will give a grearter choice of house options and a greater choice of prices," he says.
Appeals to the Unitary Plan must be lodged within a month.
