Greens question support for land law reform
The Green’s Maori affairs spokesperson says the Government needs to demonstrate far more support for its Te Ture Whenua Maori Bill before it pushes it through.
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell yesterday tabled the bill, ending efforts by concerned landowners to get more scrutiny for it from the Waitangi Tribunal.
Ms Davidson says last month’s tribunal report found land was so important to Maori that law reform could not be driven by the crown alone.
She says it’s been hard to understand what’s proposed because new drafts kept being produced.
"This bill is about Maori land for Maori so Maori need to collectively be on board and there is incredible concern from Maori. How can we progress this until Maori are fully supporting this bill," Ms Davidson says.
