Scary is how Metiria Turei describes her efforts to up her abilities in te reo Maori.
The Greens’ co-leader delivered a speech in parliament in Maori this week after taking some intensive language tutoring over the summer.
She says she’s struggled to learn Maori since high school, and her level is super-basic, at best.
"One of the challenges for it was to do a speech in the house and I think the first one of the year, just do it, and then it's done, and you can feel that you are a bit further down the road," Ms Turei says.
