The Maori hip hop dance movie Born to Dance has taken its first million dollars at the box office.

The feature by Tammy Davis premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and is currently one of the top ten films in New Zealand theatres.

Written by Steve Barr, Casey Whelan and Hone Kouka, the film introduces Huntly teen Tia-Taharoa Maipi as Tu Kaea, a young man from who will do whatever it takes to realise his dream of becoming a professional hip hop dancer.

World champion Parris Goebel has choreographed Maipi’s moves, and co-stars include Stan Walker and American actress Kerington Payne.

It was described by industry bible Variety as an astonishing Kiwi choreography showcase and proof that Maori dancers can bust a move with the best of them.
