Poverty behind obesity.

Researchers from Otago University who say poverty not Maori themselves is behind high Maori obesity levels want the government to take action to protect tamariki.
One of the researchers Dr Lisa Te Morenga says there needs to be laws against advertising junk foods and soft drinks as well as community action.
"We also need to collectively stand up and say to the government we don't want these junkie foods being sold cheaply in our comunities. We do want iniatives like a soft drink tax to send a clear mesage that these foods are not everyday foods"
Dr Te Morenga says hospitals and public spaces should not have vending machines selling junk food and soft drinks.
