Matariki story told in haka theatre
The Matariki story will unfold tonight at the new Te Oro centre in Glen Innes through haka theatre – a mash up of kapa haka, contemporary dance and theatre.
Te Manawa was created by the Hawaiki Tu performance company led by Waka Huia members and contemporary dancers Beez Ngarimu Watt and Kura te Ua.
Mr Ngarimu Watt says the starting point is the migration of the ancestors across the Pacific.
"There are four elements we portray in the story: navigation; cultivation and the union of the coming of tribes, mata me te ora and how we celebrate mata me te ora and of course the fourth one is the celebration itself," he says.
Hawaiki Tu’s Te Mana is free, but check with Te Oro for availability of seats.
