Techniques essentially eliminate Aboriginal people

Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says the forced closure of remote Aboriginal communities is a part of a continuing campaign of destruction by Australia against its indigenous people.
The Abbott Government has passed responsibility for providing services to the state governments, and Western Australia has indicated it won’t pick up the bill for more than 150 communities.
Ms Turei says it’s an extension of the Howard Government’s Northern Territory Intervention that caused huge disruption to families and communities.
She says more Aboriginal children have been taken from their families since the Stolen Generation apology in 2008 than were taken in the Stolen Generation.
"Kids are being uplifted from Aboriginal communities in those remote areas and being moved a thousand kilometres away and placed in pakeha families. This forced closure is just one further step in a whole series of oppressive abusive techniques to essentially eliminate Aboriginal communities and an entire Aboriginal people from Australia" she says.
Metiria Turei is urging Maori to join marches planned throughout the country on May 1 to protest the clearances.
