Huarahi Tika looks to the future
Te Huarahi Tika Trust is looking at its future role now responsibility for encouraging Maori involvement in information and communications technology has passed to Te Mangai Paho.
The Maori Spectrum Trust along with Maori claimant groups were sidelined by Communications Minister Amy Adams when the 4G spectrum for the next generation of mobile data networks was auctioned off.
Instead the Maori broadcast funding agency was given the task of managing a $30 million Maori ICT fund.
Trust chair Daphne Luke says the addition of new trustees Sir Harawira Gardiner, Missy Te Kanawa and George Reedy is a chance for a refresh.
"We’re looking at getting together next month. Learn about the past and think about the future. We're really interested in whats going on at this stage at the moment. Lots of groups of Maori meeting around the country talking about the ICT fund and other opportunities. We're interested in seeing what we can support "she says.
Daphne Luke says clearing the $14 million borrowed to reduce the dilution of the trust’s stake in mobile phone company Two Degrees means Te Huarahi Tika is entering a new era.
