Auckland gets Maori theatre
Maori theatre now has a home in Tamaki Makaurau.
It’s a New Lynn building previously used by the Titirangi Theatre.
Tainui Tukiwaho, who acts in the television show Step Dave, says the 30-strong Ruia Taitea Creative decided getting a building was the best way to grow Maori in the city.
The group has been working on the building to create rehearsal studios and offices, and it will launch the theatre this weekend.
He says while the ethos of the company is kaupapa Maori, the theatre won’t be restricted to Maori shows or performers.
The space will also be used for te reo Maori lessons.
