Opponents of the process being used to settle Ngapuhi treaty claims are hailing the refusal of Kaikohe hapu Ngati Whakaeke to vote a representative on to the negotiating body.
Rudy Taylor from Te Kotahitanga o Nga Hapu o Ngapuhi says the hapu represents some five thousand people and their stand is a clear message that they don’t have faith in Tuhoronuku.
He says another hapu, Ngati Tautahi, has also withdrawn its hapu kaikorero after last weekend’s hui.
Mr Taylor says the Tuhoronuku process is shambolic and it’s time for the Crown to listen to the hapu.
