Kura goes from theory to reality

The associate minister responsible for partnership schools says he's heartened to see them go from economic theory to reality.
Act leader David Seymour was at Nga Whare Waatea Marae in Mangere for this morning's opening of Te Kura Maori o Waatea, along with Education Minister Hekia Parata, local MPs Sua William Sio and Peeni Henare, former Maori Party co-leader Dame Tariana Turia, and former ACT president and Partnership Schools Working Group chair Catherine Isaac
Mr Seymour says the idea was to reduce the role of politicians in education, so it was alarming the number who turned out.
He says partnership or charter schools was to make government more reflective and responsive and allow local people to build institutions to serve their community.
Ms Parata praised the work of school sponsor the Manukau Urban Maori Authority and Waatea in raising the educational aspirations of its community.
She says kura hourua are about challenging the status quo to raise achievement.
