Chance to overhaul Maori programmes
A Maori producer says Television New Zealand’s outsourcing of its Maori programmes is a chance to reshape how Maori are presented on screen.
Maramena Roderick welcomed a commitment made by TVNZ chief executive Kevin Kendrick to Nga Aho Whakaari, which represents Maori working in film and television, that Maori independent production houses would get priority to do the work.
She says once it gives up direct control the broadcaster shouldn’t expect an identical product to what was made in house, and nor should the audience.
"Now there seems to be a sense in the Maori community that we are going to maintain the shows' format for that easier transition, whoever the prodiuction house is. For me it's a bit of a wasted opportunity. It's a fantastic opportunity to rebuild and steer that waka in a new exciting direction," she says.
Maramena Roderick says existing programme staff will need to wake up to the realities of independent production, where they can’t expect to stay on a salary year round.
